Main exhibition – Across the East

At a certain point in history, the division between East and West was determined by an arbitrary longitude, Butit was the latitudes that actually defined it, all throughout history. – When we look at this transportation of goods, workforce, ideas and philosophies from East to West and back, it becomes clear – The East is not an indication of place, but a direction.

Through time and space, this pendulum of East and West marked the discovery, of power and global economics. It exists on various scales – in cities, continents, and the world as a whole. Because the East is not merely a direction, it is a membrane, and through this membrane these ideas, philosophies, goods, and people transform – through the challenges of a journey, the translation of language, the contexts they encounter, and the forces that rule at any given moment.

The main exhibition of Jerusalem Design Week seeks to highlight the swaying movement of the pendulum between East and West, and the shadows it casts, by showcasing new and existing works by local and international designers who have looked to both directions of the pendulum, to its balance point as well as its cyclic nature.
