Get your Sunrise Here

A group of eastward-gazing alumni have been invited by the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design Jerusalem to stare back at the sun and sell the sunrise.

The elusive moment in which the sun strikes through the horizon – a blinding moment – represents, in the eyes of many, a promise of a new beginning and hope for an alternative reality. We recognize this moment as a metaphor of the power of design as well as the challenges it is faced with. A field that is constantly engaged in creating images, illustrating ideas, and implementing visions, design is required to balance between its abilities of seduction and attraction and the desire to change daily routines, to turn darkness into light.

The participating designers and artists will walk their visitors through a series of works in an attempt to “sell” the sunrise – as an idea or matter, an experience or an illusion, as a ritual or a product. The operating and interactive installations will ask their audience to prepare for the sunrise, to question who it belongs to, and bargain its price. Can this be a way to imagine new forms of commerce, sharing, giving and receiving?
