Landmark. East

Art Shelter Gallery, Jerusalem

The East indicates more than just a direction. Ancient maps were oriented eastwards because the East was considered to be the most important place, revealing the oriental orientation of its planners. The exhibition develops the theme “East” to tackle its coordinates from numerous viewpoints. Be it a concrete, technical, and physical marking; a place that marks one’s destination – as a metaphore; And in the Hebrew language, laden with layers, one can explain the concept itself as a layer that contains Kabbalistic elements. According to Jewish tradition, the East is the age-old GPS, marking a trajectory for thousands of years. The ‘Eastern wall’, or ‘East boards’ hang in Jewish homes as a symbol of Jewish orientation no matter where one resides. On the other hand, the term ‘Mizrahi’ (from the Hebrew term for East, ‘Mizrah’) refers to a particular group in Jewish-Israeli society, in social and cultural terms. The artist Jack Jano, of Moroccan descent, produces a conglomerate of images and representations, drawing from various ‘Mizrahi’ traditions and their designs. From the treasure chest of this database, the artist draws inspiration and generates commentary within the world of tradition, a primary axis in his work – sign, signified and signifier.
