A series of lectures, workshops and meetings involved in the different aspects of graphic design in Arabic, English, and Hebrew.

Tri-lingual design is unique to the state of Israel and is challenging for designers and intellectuals who wish to spread their teachings in three languages. The series of events seeks to raise the awareness of the professional audience as well as the general public, of the challenges faced by designers, while conducting a discourse on design, social and cultural dilemmas.

Curator Hana Qubty, along with Palestinian designers Nawal Arafat, Hamody Gannam, Siko Tatour and other guests, will hold five meetings during the week and will present the printed guide “Tips for the Israeli Designer”, focusing on Arabic language and typography, a review of Palestinian posters, contemporary Palestinian design between Haifa and Ramallah, and more.

The number of fonts in Arabic is almost endless and at any given moment designers are creating new fonts in response to the large consumption of the enormous number of users in the Arab world. The workshop will expose the Israeli designer to the fonts in the Arab world, the substantive differences between them, and the geographical and political reference in each font, as well as a brief explanation of Arabic calligraphy.
Designers: Siko Tatour and Tal Gold.
The workshop is expected to last two hours, in addition to the one hour lecture.

 

شمال-جنوب North-South – LectureIn recent years, an art and design scene has been developing in both Haifa and Ramallah. As a Haifa native who lives and works in the city,Hamody Gannam will present a broad overview of the flourishing scene in Haifa and provide prominent examples from the simultaneously developing scene in Ramallah.

Trilingual Design – A Lecture
The lecture will center around the concept of “language” and will examine it by means of a wide overview of the presence of Arabic, Hebrew and English in the public sphere. The lecture will present the designer’s grapple with a language that appears as text/image on a format, whether in one (mother tongue), two or more languages. On the message, the meaning, the idea, the performance, the importance, the reading, the functioning, the coping, the complexity and the visible and invisible context among various designs in differing fields within the local and current arena of visual communications.

hat nafas – Lecture and performance
Designer Hamudi Ghenam will present the history of poster design in Palestine while exhibiting manipulations that he himself exercises on these posters, while designing a poster live during the performance

Tips for the Israeli Designer – Lecture and Workshop
The workshop will begin with an explanation of the use of the Arabic language and general rules relating to it (Understanding the basic structure of the letters, connecting them, and assembling sentences). Later on, a printed guide will be revealed, titled “Tips for the Israeli Designer from the Arab Designer”.
