Lectures, Films, and Additional Encounters at Hadir Bar:
*Film Screening: Levantine
She lived in Cairo, Paris and New York, but died in a retirement home in Givatayim. She was admired and beautiful, but few knew her in her life and even less after her death. She was the first to write about Levantine and Mizrahi identity, as no one did, and only a few of her letters were ever translated. Film director Raphael Baloulou sets out on a journey to Israel and France in the wake of Jacqueline Kahanoff, the Levantine scholar and writer. Through an encounter with her elderly friends, and leading intellectuals in the Mizrahi discourse in Israel, Baloulou illustrates not only the portrait of this impressive artist, but also traces and reveals what happened to Israeli Levantine culture as an option of honor and pride. This film is the 14th film in “The Hebrews” project.50 mins. Hebrew, English, French. Subtitles: Hebrew and English.
